Listo.

So i finally got a response for an internship! Basically i will be working with the Title Three program with the U.S. State Department of Education. The program focuses on working with State and local schools to improve education for English learners. There is a chance I could be going to Puerto Rico for this. I am pretty excited. I suppose I’m notba complete failure after all!

Call me, maybe.

So it has been quite awhile since my last post. Yes i know you’re all dying from Dakota withdrawals. Well to say the least it’s been a comical last few weeks. I have gotten robbed, had an amazing time in the Galapagos, and have become more anxious to go home and eat pasta with my besties.

The black girl gets robbed. Yea so I was walking down Mera to meet some people to go to Cotopaxi for some hiking and biking with my friend Dylana. It was about 7 am and I was barely awake and 4 or 5 guys just come up to us and push us up against a wall asking for plata. Now, I’m not upset by the act itself, but rather the ease unto which my sense of security was taken from me that early morning. I’ve never felt unsafe or scared in Ecuador because up until that point I had only been asked for directions, about my fashion sense, and where I was out of simple curiosity from people. I liked being thought of as someone similar to Ecuadorians, someone from Latin America„ or at least someone of color who relates to certain elements of life that either shock you or impress you. Certain experiences come from being of mixed heritage, which I gather still seem to be of some importance today in Ecuador. So being robbed of my camera, jacket, phone and other material items shattered my comfort within a country that had been none other than kind, welcoming, and curious. What is funny is the fact that about a week later, I saw some ladrones wearing my bright purple extra small jacket one night while partying with some friends. The police did nothing and my friends and I were taken aback by this. Like seriously guys?

On another note, Galapagos was amazing. Snorkeling and awimming with wildlife was incredibly breathtaking. Who knew that sea lions were so playful and fun? That marine iguanas acted like pimps, as if they owned the world? And that penguins were super fast and sexy? Well, I had the opportunity to learn all this and more while embarking on one of the world’s beautiful treasures. I roomed with my girls and had a lot of fun. We even started a “you know you’re in Ecuador when…” list. Perfect.

Time is winding down here pretty fast. I leave next Saturday. I still cannot believe it. One of my friends already left to make it in time for her graduation. We went to Crepes and Waffles the night before her departure and shared some laughs. She is awesome and i am definitely planning a reunion for thegirls i’ve met here. Some were down for going to LA. Sounds good to me. I definitely have met some characters here. Some cute guys that have made me a little nervous ( theres nothing more dangerous than a boy with charm, as christina says), some very opinionated people, some crazy ones, some quiet ones, and for sure some funny ones. I am glad that i met them and i hope to see some of them again one day.

Mi familia is still amazing. I dont know what I would have done without such caring and enjoyable individuals during my time here. I really do consider them a part of my family, particularly after playing hide and seek with my cousins and brother at night after dinner. So much fun! I am definitely going to miss them. Too bad the ladrones have my camera. I had some good family moments on there.

So, I am headed back to LA single, tan, more geographically and culturally astute than ever before and ready to unpack what I’ve learned. It seems like Grinnellians have continued to do whAt theydo best: party and make it through another impossijble semester at Grinnell. I’m excited for my triple with my best girls, to more partying, and to creating new memories for my last year of college. Say what now? Yes, I will be a senior. Crazy!! Well, i suppose it’s time. Can’t wAit!

Es tiempo para conseguir un novio ecuatoriano

So let’s see. These last few days were a bit crazy. I went to a Baroque choir concert in the Centro Histórico. It was super nice. Our new Environmental Professor is really knowledgeable and seems to care. He called me out like 20 million times. Story of my life. However, we watched an intriguing documentary on Fishing. Basically we’re killing the Blue Fin Tuna for money of course. We have absolutely decimated the population. It’s utterly ridiculous. In other news, I had dinner at a Mexican restaurant with my friends Hillary, Dylana, and Ariela. Lots of laughs and interesting conversations. The waiters hated us, but whatevs.

Dylana, Ariela, and I went to the Telefériqo finally this weekend. I’m sure you guys are just like what? So it’s this small Disney;and-type ride that takes you up to the top of Pichincha. The view was spectacular. We were accompanied to the top by an Ecuadorian family with a little girl that resembled my cousin Sophia to bits! She was sassy and knew what she wanted. Loved it. After that, we went to this amusement park down the way. It was interesting that you had to pay for each individual ride. But, we decided to go on “Thunder” this crazy thing that tossed us into the air upside down and all around. Ariela and I screamed but then I just started laughing the entire time. It was fun.Afterwards I did some homework and chilled out. I had a good, long  conversation with my host brother about relationships and other stuff like that.

Yesterday, we had a mandatory art salida. Meeting at 7am (most of us) we were on our way to God knows where. The highlight of the trip: the bus driver guy driving us up a mountain for about 30 minutes without a clue as to where we were going. Our professor was like, we should be here already. How much further? He was like Where are we going again? The dude honestly drove up this rocky mountain just for kicks. Like what? we were all dying. It was insane. We visited some church, some markets with questionable items, and sanctuaries and ate lunch. Nick ordered calimari and it was an insane amount of food. I had Camarones apanados. So good, but the amount of food, again, was ridiculous. We eventually left and arrived back in main city around 5:30pm. What a long, wasted day.

After, I met up with Ariela and we went out. I met some of her friends: Juan, I think who knows how to salsa really well!. Man, this guy can move his hips like no other. I danced to my favorite Spanish songs and had a ton of fun. We club hopped and found some awesome guys to dance with. It made me realize I haven’t had an Ecuadorian boyfriend yet while here. I guess I haven’t really tried due to the recent break up, but it’s time. A guy who speaks Spanish and can dance well is ridiculously sexy. Let the fun begin.

Snoopy, por favor, no ladres!

i need a bf like this. one with an expansive vocabulary. it’s sexy.

Y señora ninja walks away..

So I somehow scored two interviews for Comedy Central for an internship this summer. I’m a bit nervous, I must say, however I have a feeling that it will go well. I’ve practiced a couple times with JD and AS. So hopefully things will come into fruition.

On another note, I ventured to Montañita this past weekend. My friend Dylana and I decided last minute to switch gears to head to this beach instead of Cañoa in favor of getting to know a new group. Results: perfect. I tanned super quickly and have a small patch on my tummy that’s burned (insert sad face here). I met some new friends: Carlos I think his name was, some AfroEcuadorian guy who liked Snoop Dogg, and some crazy Chileans who liked to take pictures in clubs. I got to dance, I got to tan, and I almost died in these crazy waves at Frailes. (another beach). Overall, I would say this trip was a success. I definitely got to see other sides of people in my program, which was pretty awesome as well. Pues, tengo que dormir ahora porque necesito estar lista para mi entrevista mañana. Chau.

Pieces Of Mee: KONY 2012: Causing more harm than good.

so i just started reading about the situation thanks to jen and i’ve been hearing conflicting views on it. i understand this point of view presented here, but i would like to see tangible facts and examples. i haven’t heard anything about this, but then again i’m in ecuador, soooo i’m behind on the headlines.

Dear Jason Russell,

After being bombarded with your KONY 2012 crusade, I have no choice but to respond to your highly inaccurate, offensive, and harmful propaganda. I realized I had to respond in hopes of stopping you before you cause more violence and deaths to the Acholi people (Northern…
